Learning Objects from education.uoit.ca

SMART Board, Site Recommendations December 2nd, 2009

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology has many K-12 interactive learning objects for various math and science topics. Some of the topics include the Water Cycle (seen below), Plant Reproduction, and Multiplying Decimals. Most of the learning objects contain student and teacher resources, as well as animations and quizzes on the topic. These all work great on the SMART Board! To find the complete list, I simply searched “learning object” on their website.

Brain Test from MathNook.com

SMART Board, Site Recommendations November 19th, 2009

I found out about MathNook.com from the iLearnTechnology blog. MathNook.com provides a good collection of flash math games, and there are a few that work great on the SMART Board such as the Brain Test activity. From the site: Drag the correct math symbol to complete the equation. The symbol match portion of the game requires you to draw a line to the matching symbol.  Remember to draw an “o” if no match.

Coordinate Geometry from SmartTutor.com

SMART Board, Site Recommendations November 6th, 2009

SmartTutor.com is a web-based educational software program for Kindergarten through 5th grade students. The great thing about the interactives at SmartTutor.com is that an introduction of the concept is given before the activity begins. There is a monthly subscription cost; however, there are a good number of free math and reading activities offered, and most work well on the SMART Board. There are additional resources such as flash cards, coloring pages, and word searches, too, so please check it out. Below is Coordinate Geometry where students must find locate and plot ordered pairs.

Learning Clip’s Division Ducks

SMART Board, Site Recommendations October 26th, 2009

Learningclip.co.uk is a math website that includes many different interactive activities that work well on the SMART Board. What’s different about this site is that each activity begins with a video clip explaining the activity.  This site is based out of the UK, so you’ll have to watch for the currency and measurement differences. The activities can be made full screen, and each comes with 3 handy tools to help students work the problem on the board: a clock, calculator, and notepad. The resources are free, but you do need to create an account to access them. It’s well worth it! Check out Division Ducks.
